Student Perspective
As a child in Mumbai, Manisha Biswas was fascinated by pictures of Australian flora and fauna on the Discovery Channel. 20 years later she is studying for her Master in Science in Information Technology (MSIT) at the Australian campus of Carnegie Mellon University in Adelaide.

Manisha completed her Bachelor of Computer Engineering at Mumbai University and worked as a project leader for Indian IT giant Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) as well as a subject matter expert in Re-marketing for her clients.

Manisha came to Carnegie Mellon University Australia (CMUA) in 2008 because of its first class reputation, world class faculty and facilities.

“CMUA’s academic reputation was one factor. The other factor is that Australia is a tolerant multicultural society. I wanted to study with Australian and international students. I will be working with people from all over the world, so I want to understand the way they think, they work and their cultural background,” Manisha says.

First impression
“My first impression about Australia, after landing was ‘wow, what a beautiful country.’ I used to watch Australia on TV and never thought I would be here. It never occurred to me that I would get a chance to see koalas and wallabies in their natural surroundings.”

“I like to travel alone and found Australia is the one of those countries where one can do that without any worries. I can’t wait to take the famous Australian Train journey “The Ghan” and explore the Northern Territory.”

Adelaide is a very beautiful city where streets are clean and lined with roses. It is a city where I found lots of different species of parrot that are absolutely beautiful. To me Adelaide is more like the “cultural capital of Australia”.

“I found people in Adelaide very polite. In Mumbai I am considered a polite person but here I felt locals were more polite than me! They are always ready to help you.”

“I enjoy using public transport because I am always greeted with a big smile from the drivers and fellow passengers. It is a city where locals are very creative and sophisticated, and this has helped me refine my own taste.”

Manisha said the Adelaide environment was calm and conducive to study.

“You are not tense or stressed. You can concentrate. You are free.”

When Manisha graduates this year she will apply for business analyst positions as she wants to marry her technology and business skills together. She said it is important for technology leaders to align technology goals with organization goals to help businesses survive.

Transformed
Manisha says that studying in Adelaide and at CMUA has transformed her.

“Before coming to CMUA I was a shy person. I wasn’t aware of my own strengths. I took Professor Linda Babcock’s Negotiation class and I found that I am a good negotiator.

Manisha was surprised to hear the negative stories coming out of Melbourne concerning the poor treatment of Indian students.

“I feel at home here and a part of Australian society. There have been times when I had to leave CMUA late at night but I never had any problems. I feel safe.”

“Australia is a big country with very friendly and helpful people. You will learn lots. After one year your perspective about life and people will change. CMUA standards are very high but that is good. The hard work here reflects the hard work you need to put in to life,” Manisha says.
